Andrew Goodwin's definition of a music video
Goodwin believes that there are six different conventions within a music video. These include genre characteristics, the relationship between the lyrics and the video, the relationship between the music and the visuals, multiple close up shots of the artists "star image", frequent references to notion of looking and inter-textual references used in humorous or parody videos.
Genre characteristics:
This convention covers the style of the music video, iconography, rock videos would tend to use stages to represent their performances live in front of an audience and dance routines for girl or boy bands.
Relationship between the lyrics and the visual:
Sometimes artists would try and use visuals to reinforce what the lyrics say. However the relationship between the two could either be illustrative, amplifying or contradicting.
Music and the visuals:
He understood that visuals are also commonly repeated within a chorus to emphasise the repetition in the beat and lyrics.
"star image"
This convention is used to help promote the artist/ vocalist in order to help boost the sales in the single. It is commonly used throughout the video however if it were a female artist then provocative angles are often used to sexualise them.
Notion of looking:
This includes the artist whether male or female to be represented seductively or if they maintain eye contact with the camera.
Inter-textual references:
This could include references to tv programmes, films, and other music videos. It can also be known as the 'in joke'.
